How often should I change my oil?

Oil is cheap compared with an engine. Long-life intervals on the sticker are for ideal motorway use. Short trips around Croydon, school runs and stop-start traffic dirty oil faster. We would rather change it a bit early than a bit late.

A simple rule

If you are unsure: once a year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first, unless the handbook is stricter. High-mileage drivers should look at every 6,000 miles, which is our interim service.

Signs it is overdue

Black grit on the dipstick, a rattly cold start, the service light on, or no stamp in the book for 12 months. Do not just top up and ignore a leak.
