Can I drive without an MOT?
Short answer: almost never. The exception is driving to a pre-booked MOT. Not to work. Not to the shops. Police and insurers do not treat this as a grey area.
The law
If the car needs an MOT and the certificate has run out, you can be fined and given penalty points. You can check the expiry date for free at gov.uk/check-mot-status with the registration.
Insurance
Plenty of policies refuse a claim if there is no MOT. That can matter more than the fine. Get the test booked before it expires. You can test up to a month early and keep the same expiry date. How early you can book.
