What should I do if my car overheats?

A climbing temperature gauge is not a suggestion. Keep driving and you can warp a head or blow a gasket. Stop when it is safe. Wait. Then ring us. We would rather recover it than rebuild it.

Do not

Do not twist the cap off a hot radiator or reservoir. Boiling coolant causes serious burns. Do not keep going “just to get home” if the gauge is in the red and you have somewhere to stop.

Common causes

Low coolant from a leak, stuck thermostat, failed fan, water pump, collapsed hose, or head gasket. We pressure-test the system once it is cool.
