What is the legal tyre tread depth?
1.6mm is the legal floor, not a target. Wet Croydon roads need more than the minimum to stop well. We will tell you if a tyre will fail the MOT or if it will get you through winter.
The 20p test
Insert a 20p in the grooves. If the outer band of the coin is visible, you are likely close to or under the limit. Check a few places on each tyre, including the inner edge.
Other fail points
Cuts, bulges, exposed cords, mixing radials wrongly, or tyres of very different types on the same axle. Tread is only one part of the MOT tyre check.
